Why CWPAC Endorsed
Andy Harris ran his first ever political campaign in 1998. That was the year he knocked off a “moderate” Republican who was the State Senate Minority Leader. The incumbent at the time had actively led the fight to kill the partial birth abortion ban in Maryland and Mr. Harris couldn’t let that stand. That started his career in the Maryland Senate. He is the chairman of the pro-life caucus in the Maryland Senate. But that isn’t all Senator Harris has done to distinguish himself as the conservative in this race;
· Andy led the filibuster against embryonic stem cell research in Maryland.
· Senator Harris voted against tax-payer funding of abortions and against funding for Planned Parenthood.
· Sponsored a conscience clause bill for pharmacists that would allow these pharmacy workers to practice their faith even at work.
· Sponsored a traditional marriage constitutional amendment.
· Andy led the fight and successfully stopped the state from mandating 12 year olds receiving the HPV vaccine.
· Sponsored a school voucher bill.
In February of this year, Senator Harris with the help of CWPAC knocked off entrenched incumbent and liberal Congressman Wayne Gilchrest. Andy is used to tough races and the general election race has the potential to be one of the closest races in the country.
2008 Race Outlook
The hardest part for Senator Harris was beating a liberal entrenched incumbent like Wayne Gilchrest (who still hasn’t endorsed Andy) in February. This is a race that has to be looked at continually because of the current political environment.
